The Ken Harman Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to two deserving Joel Barlow High School Seniors who have played youth soccer in the towns of Easton or Redding and competed on the Boys or Girls Varsity Soccer Team at JBHS. The scholarship is given in memory of Ken Harman who played a pivotal role in the early years of developing youth soccer in Redding. Ken gave of himself in service to the youth as a coach, a manager and especially as a mentor.
The Easton Redding United Soccer Club recognizes the commitment, perseverance and hard work that our student athletes go through on their journey to high school graduation. We are pleased to offer this annual monetary scholarship of $500 to two players who have exemplified qualities such as leadership, service to the community, and academic achievement accompanied with a desire to be a life-long learner. The scholarship is not designed to recognize the “best” soccer player or the longest varsity tenure. Rather, this award seeks to recognize a model citizen who, at a young age, has achieved academic and athletic goals and has given of their time to help others. The award will be presented at the JBHS Awards Ceremony in the Spring.
Eligibility Criteria:
*Current Joel Barlow High School Senior
*Participation in the ERU soccer program for a minimum of three seasons
*Participation in JBHS Varsity Soccer (mandatory participation senior year)
*Enrollment in a full-time undergraduate course of study in an accredited two or four year technical school, college or university
Selection Criteria
*Number of years playing for ERU and JBHS
*Extra-curricular activities related to ERU: mentoring, coaching and good sportsmanship
*Academic achievement: minimum 3.0 GPA or higher
*Volunteerism through school, family, or community involvement
*250-500 word essay: How has soccer impacted your life?
Scholarship Awards
*Award amount: $500
*Two scholarships awarded per year - one to a senior boy and one to a senior girl**
*Applications must be submitted on or before April 30th
*Selection by ERU board members
*Monies may be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies or room and board if living on campus
*Scholarship is payable to the institution and will be mailed directly to the school in August
** If there is not a sufficient number of applicants who meet the Eligibility Criteria, one or both of the scholarship awards will be held over and awarded in addition to the awards the following year.
